Tips For Choosing Kitchen Countertops
By Adrian Loepp

In today's market, people have many choices when it comes to the countertop materials that are available to choose from. Some are from the do it yourself variety while others take special skill and tools to have installed.

Some countertops are easy enough that the do it yourself folks can install them. Others will require you to have the specific tools and a higher skill level to get them installed. Finding the kitchen countertop material that suits your style will be you first big chore. None of the products that are available are perfect.

If you go with a lower end brand such as Formica, you enjoy several benefits such as being inexpensive, resistant to stains and it usually comes in a broad assortment of textures, unique designs and various colors. One of its main weaknesses is that it's easy to slice into the material when you are cutting food on it. Once the cut marks get food and dirt into them, they become discolored and become quite noticeable. Plastic laminate is also as the name implies, plastic. So it's very easy to accidentally place a hot pan on it and melt it. It's highly recommended that you always use a cutting board or other surface if you install plastic laminate countertops. It will extend the look of your countertops considerably.

Another popular brand of kitchen countertops is ceramic tile. The tiles won't cut or burn like plastic laminate and have a nice hand crafted appearance to them. You can go with a basic look or get as fancy as you want with tiles. There are plenty of colors and textures to choose from. The biggest challenge with ceramic tiles is the grout between the tiles. Lighter grout will begin to turn dark against the lighter tiles and darker grout will appear lighter then the darker tiles surrounding it. You really have to keep the grout clean or it will stain and become quite noticeable. Another item to consider with ceramic tiles is the effect it has on your cooking. If you bake a lot of breads and cakes, it's a challenge to roll dough out on a counter with grout lines on it. It's not completely flat or smooth, so keep this in mind if you like to bake.

A third choice to consider in your hunt for kitchen counter tops is granites and solid surface counters. Granite countertops are a beautiful natural product and solid surface materials are made in a factory. They both come in beautiful styles and colors and can make any kitchen look better. Granite countertops have rich tones and wonderful multi colored surfaces. Solid surface materials can either be multi colored or they even are available in solid colors if you wish. Granites and solid surfaces are pricier then the other products mentioned and you don't have as wide of a selection, but the quality makes up it.

If you know the strengths and weakness of each product, it will help you make the right selection so you will be happy with the kitchen countertops that you choose.

Home Shows such as Seattle Home Show Daily provide a great venue for you to shop and compare the different selection of kitchen countertops available on the market. There are many vendors and products to choose from.
